For Weal or Woe: Women's Influences on the War Between the States

This interactive, 45-60 minute program introduces you to many of the incredible acts women performed in the name of support, survival, and sanity during the American Civil War. 

You will meet nurses, smugglers, soldiers, spies, as well as lots of unusual ladies who gave their "all"  to the war effort.  The "Nancy Harts", La Belle Rebelle, Crazy Bette, the French Woman, and Sue Mundy are just a few of the names that will come up in this presentation. 

Program is perfect for all ages, venues and groups and has been performed in eight states to a variety of organizations.  Electricity preferred but not required.

 

What's Up With That Dress?

Women's clothing of the 19th century

This 30-45 minute program delves into the details of how women dressed in the mid-19th century.  What made those skirts stick out and why?  You will meet Miss Anna Belle Leah, a lovely young lady who will allow you a peek under her garments.  We will discuss the effects of the blockade and how enterprising women adjusted to the great shortages brought on by the War Between the States.  

Other topics include mourning rituals, economics, high fashion and everyday work clothes.

Excellent for Elementary schools.

Actual women's magazines of the 1800's will be available for discriminating browsers.  

Civil War Refugee

100,000s of women, children and old men were left homeless as the result of the horrors of war.  Let Miss Ellie tell her sad tale of displacement.  Once a wealthy, slaveholding mistress of a large home, she has been reduced to begging for food, shelter and protection.

Victorian Trade Cards

Not long after the Civil War, with the onset of the Industrial Revolution, commercial enterprises began competing for the attention of consumers.  Thus began the birth of advertising.  See actual trade cards from the 1800's and learn how women were so influential in the world of advertising. You will see intriguing puzzle cards, elaborate three-dimensional cards, and temperature sensitive cards that will have images appear by holding the card to heat.

30-45 minutes of historical business images that were the forerunners to today's advertising genius.

Program is suitable for high school audiences and up, especially interesting for merchants or students of advertising. Electricity required    

Corsets to Congress: Women's Reform 1860-1890 

 

We will take a look at the interesting events and "FIRSTS" for women of the mid-late 19th century, including dress reform, education, artistic contributions and how things erupted to establish the foundation for women's activists of the early 20th century.  Program lasts approximately 45 minutes and is suitable for audiences of high school age and up.  Electricity required.

This PowerPoint program brings to life the hardships the women of Arkansas faced during the War Between the States. Meet the ladies and learn why Arkansas's war involvement was totally unique to that of the rest of the nation.  Listen to the women who lived through it tell their stories of deprivation, desolation, and destruction.

A 45-minute presentation that is suitable for all students of Women's history, Civil War history and Arkansas history.

Female Confederate Spies 

 

Don’t let looks fool you, these sweet Southern Ladies were more than just a pretty face and a lot of grace.  You will meet many of the truly devoted women of the Confederate States of America who gave their most honored attention to the Cause.

Program lasts approximately 45 minutes and is suitable for audiences ages 10 and up.  Electricity required.    

Female Soldiers, Mighty Fighters

                                                  

Meet the women who donned men’s attire and fought alongside the regular troops.  The desire to serve their nation was so strong, they were willing to ignore their gender and society’s consternation in order to be soldiers.  

Program lasts approximately 45 minutes and is suitable for audiences ages 10 and up.  Electricity required.  

 

Why Are You Here?

This program discusses the various roles women can play in the hobby of Civil War reenacting.  Not all women can be all things and this will give you ideas on how to improve your impression. Subject matter of this program is best suited for reenactments or for an audience interested in female reenacting.

Reenacting on a Budget

How can you afford this hobby we call reenacting?  In this program, you will learn some shortcuts and economic tips and tricks to help you on your way to enjoying this great family activity.

The Hunley Funeral

On April 17, 2004 the eight members of the Confederate submarine, H.L. Hunley were finally laid to a hero's rest in the Magnolia Cemetery, Charleston, SC.  This 30 minute program shows the sights and sounds of that experience as it was seen through the eyes of one participant.
